About This Project

About Useless Bay Residence

This home is located on Useless Bay which is known for its unique setting with dramatic views of the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound. Seated on the beach and facing directly south, the home offers a great place to enjoy water sports and bask in the long days of summer. The home is organized around a large two story great room. Flanking gables with stained cedar siding and stone base define the architecture. Banks of 10 foot-tall glass doors and tall windows provide expansive views of the sound as well as the mountains. Additional light is introduced into the two-story great room through two twenty-foot long clerestory windows above the bottom cord of the trusses on the north and south sides.

The ceiling of the great room is enriched by a tapestry of fir beams and paneling, merging northwest contemporary and traditional Japanese detailing. Floor to ceiling stone fireplaces, one at each end of the great room, provide memorable “bookends” for this dramatic space.
